Focused Session at IRS 2026

Advanced Weather Radar Systems: Multivariate and Multi-Frequency Approaches for Atmospheric Sensing

This focus-session will address recent advances in weather radar systems with a strong emphasis on multiparametric and multi-frequency radar technologies. The session will explore how polarimetric, Doppler, and spectral radar measurements improve the characterization of precipitation, clouds, and severe weather phenomena.

Special attention will be given to the use of multi-frequency observations for microphysical retrievals, attenuation correction, and hydrometeor classification.
Contributions will cover novel radar architectures, calibration strategies, and system design trade-offs for ground-based and airborne platforms. Advanced signal processing and data fusion techniques enabling enhanced spatial and temporal resolution will be highlighted.

The session will also discuss synergies between weather radars and complementary sensors, including satellites and numerical weather prediction models. Real-world experiments, long-term monitoring campaigns, and operational deployments are especially encouraged.
